Summer

In Azerbaijan, the summers are hot and last from June to September. The weather gets quite hot and uncomfortable and in Baku, temperatures can even reach 40 degrees centigrade. If you are visiting though, check out the highlands like Sheki or Quba where the weather might be perfect for hiking or the beaches along Absheron Peninsula. So, if you’re not planning to stick to the hot lowlands, summer could actually be the best time to travel to Azerbaijan.

Autumn

Expect rain in Baku during autumn, starting in October. But many locals feel that October is the best time to visit Azerbaijan because the temperature is moderate and comfortable. Hiking is not a good idea and by November, the weather begins to get a lot cooler.

Winter

Winters tend to get cold and at times can go below freezing. Baku however is quite colorful with New Year and Christmas celebrations underway.

Winter is a great time to hit the slopes, try a traditional steam bath or taste some of Azerbaijan’s hearty dishes, such as plov and xingal, that will keep you warm during the chilly months.

Spring

As February ends, villages across the country start to buzz with excitement and activity. The Persian New Year (Navruz) on March 21 is one of the most important events on the Azeri calendar, marking the rebirth of life and the arrival of spring.  People start preparing for the festivities well in advance and traveling to a remote village to experience the age-old traditions firsthand will likely become a highlight of your trip. While the snow of the mountains doesn’t begin to melt until mid-April, Spring is a great time for city exploration, historical tours, and picnics among the wildflowers.
